Airport Layover Tips for Business Travellers

For seasoned business travellers, airport layovers can often be part and parcel of the travel process

Whilst direct connections and shorter layovers are now the preference for many travellers, longer layovers are sometimes unavoidable depending on the route and final destination. When travel plans change unexpectedly - whether due to flight scheduling, delays, or missed connections - a layover can offer an unexpected opportunity. Even intentional layovers can be made productive.

Whether your layover is short, long or unexpected, here are 10 creative ways to make the most of your time at the airport:

Use airport lounges

Consider booking into an airport lounge for better Wi-Fi connectivity, power outlets and a more comfortable workspace. Airport lounges offer a quieter environment away from the hustle and bustle of the main terminal, allowing guests to concentrate on getting work done without interruptions. Enjoy free lounge amenities such as food and refreshments, luxurious seating, dedicated wellness spaces, and even outdoor terraces. Some lounges also offer mindfulness zones and shower facilities to keep you refreshed and rejuvenated.

Catch up on work

A layover is an ideal opportunity to catch up on postponed work. Find a quiet, comfortable spot and dive into your tasks – whether that is catching up on emails, working on current projects or filing expenses from your ongoing business trip. Set aside an hour to really focus on getting work done as this will mean less for you to catch up on later. Layovers can also be an ideal time for quick virtual meetings. With a workspace in airport lounges and noise-cancelling headphones, you have the perfect setting for a productive meeting.

Keep informed

As with any transit through an airport, it is important to keep an eye on any flight changes, gate announcements etc. This is especially important during a layover as you do not want to miss your connecting flight. Flight information is usually displayed on screens in terminals and lounges to keep passengers in the loop. Knowledgeable airline and airport staff are also on hand for assistance. We recommend downloading flight tracker apps or individual airport apps to access the latest information.

Stretch and move

Due to their vast size, airports offer travellers excellent opportunities to get up and stretch their legs. It is a good idea to keep your body moving in between flights as you will be sitting down for a long period onboard. Take the opportunity to explore the airport and go for a power walk once every hour. This could be a brief 10-minute walk or longer, depending on your preference. Taking regular breaks between working periods will also refresh your mind and improve your focus.

Connect and network

Take advantage of networking opportunities when in airport lounges, business lounges or dedicated workspaces. These designated areas offer ample opportunity to meet and connect with fellow professionals from various companies across the globe. If you would prefer to socialise online, why not spend your time on a professional platform like LinkedIn, where you can update your profile and connect with others, turning your waiting time into a potential business opportunity.

Sample local cuisine

If the opportunity is available within the airport, you can make your layover more exciting by trying some local dishes unique to the country you are visiting. If you would prefer to stick to what you know, airports usually offer a diverse range of culinary options from all over the world, so you are sure to find something that you like. If your layover is long, it is a good idea to eat to ensure you keep your energy levels up in preparation for your next flight.

Explore airport shops

Airport shops offer a range of products to make your layover time more comfortable. Stock up on water or healthy snacks for your next flight or purchase some toiletries or other essentials you may have forgotten to pack. Take advantage of the duty-free stores at the airport and ask about the latest promotions. Be mindful of the duty-free limits for your destination to avoid additional taxes on your purchases.

Do some reading

Use this time to unwind with a good book. If you didn't bring one, most major airports have bookshops or newsstands where you can find a good read or the latest magazines. Alternatively, could download an eBook. If you would prefer to keep focused on business, you could dive into into industry news or to really keep your mind ticking, polish your skillset with a webinar or eLearning module.

Enjoy some entertainment

Head to a lounge, put on your headphones, and indulge in a recreational activity. Whether you’re binge-watching your favourite series or scrolling through your social media pages, take this opportunity to relax and unwind.

Rest and recharge

Whilst it is great to be productive during layover time, we all need time to rest and recuperate. Make sure you allocate time to simply switch off and catch up on rest. Whether that is having a quick power nap or sitting doing nothing, it is important to let your mind and body recharge before the next leg of your journey commences.
