Entry-Exit System Guidance
The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully operational across the 29 Schengen countries, replacing passport stamps with digital records of entries and exits for non-EU travellers.
First-time users are required to provide biometric data, including fingerprints and a facial image, alongside their passport details.
While the European Commission says the system is strengthening border security and helping detect identity fraud, travellers should continue to expect longer-than-usual processing times at some Schengen border crossings as the EES rollout beds in.
While experiences vary by airport and time of day, delays and extended queues are still being reported, particularly for first-time users completing biometric enrolment
Advice for business travellers:
- Arrive earlier than usual for flights to and from the Schengen area.
- Allow extra time for initial biometric registration under EES.
- Avoid tight connections and back-to-back meetings after arrival.
- Build flexibility into itineraries, particularly during busy travel periods.
- Ensure passports are valid and easily accessible to help streamline processing.
