New Zealand ETA Reminder

Please be advised that Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) app and online application process are now available

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)

As of 1 October 2019 international visitors travelling to New Zealand will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), even if they are listed on the Visa waiver countries and territories

Apply now

Visa waiver countries and territories
Passport holders of some countries and territories do not have to apply for a visa before they travel to NZ but must hold an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority)

Visiting New Zealand

If you plan to visit New Zealand for a short period, you must request an NZeTA before you travel if you:

  • travel on a passport from a country on the list of visa waiver countries and territories
  • leave for New Zealand on or after 1 October 2019, and
  • are visiting for up to 3 months — or, if you are a British citizen, up to 6 months

Things to note:

  • Australian citizens do not need an NZeTA
  • Allow up to 72 hours for processing, but it could take as little as 10 minutes
  • You may also have to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). The IVL costs NZD $35 and is paid at the same time as the NZeTA.
  • From 1 October 2019, if you are from a visa waiver country you must hold an NZeTA before you travel.
  • An NZeTA request costs NZD $12 if completed online

International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy

Many tourists, people on working holidays, and some students and workers visiting New Zealand must pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD $35.
If you need to pay the IVL, you pay it when you:

  • request an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority), or
  • apply for your visa
